Learning Objectives

1. Evaluate patients for chronic pain by documentation of a thorough pain assessment.

2. Establish a patient-centered treatment plan with an emphasis on improving function through the development of long-term self-management skills.

3. Establish protocols for careful patient selection and close monitoring of patients prescribed opioids for signs of misuse or abuse, emphasizing the use of formal patient contracts and shared decision-making strategies.
