Learning Objectives

Upon completion of this session, you should be able to:

1. Evaluate patients presenting with chronic, nonterminal pain to assess for potential opioid responsiveness and opioid risk.
2. Develop an evidence-based treatment plan that involves the appropriate selections of an initial opioid, continuous monitoring, adjustment or tapering, discontinuation, alternative therapies, or referral to a pain subspecialist. 
3. Identify evidence-based, non-opioid-based strategies for chronic pain management including TENs units, cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) and medical marijuana.
