Learning Objectives

Upon completion of this session, you should be able to:

  1. Screen all patients for tobacco use.
  2. Assist patients who smoke cigarettes with smoking cessation using a combination of evidence-based methods.
  3. Perform a counseling and shared decision-making visit regarding lung cancer screening for high-risk patients.
  4. Summarize current guidelines for the monitoring of patients with pulmonary nodules.
  5. Describe the initial diagnostic evaluation of symptomatic patients with suspected lung cancer.
  6. Summarize methods of tissue diagnosis and staging in patients with lung cancer.
  7. Counsel patients with lung cancer about how functional capacity may affect man¬agement options.
  8. Discuss the roles of team members in a multidisciplinary team caring for patients with lung cancer.

Kelly Latimer, MD, MPH, FAAFP, is chief medical officer at the US Naval Hospital Sigonella, Italy. She is an associate professor in the department of family medicine at the Uniformed Ser­vices University of the Health Sciences (USU) in Bethesda, Maryland. Dr Latimer served on an expert panel for the National Academies National Cancer Policy Forum, which developed recom­mendations for the implementation of lung cancer screening. She authored an article on lung cancer for American Family Physician in 2015. 

Timothy Mott, MD, FAAFP, is the family medicine specialty leader to the Surgeon General of the US Navy. He is an associate professor in the department of family medicine at the USU. Dr Mott is the chairman of the board and vice president of publications for the Family Physicians Inquiries Network.
